Lightscape San Diego With Kids: The Botanic Garden After Dark

A mile of glowing trail in Encinitas, timed tickets, the best entry slot for small legs, and what to pack.

Fair warning: someone will ask to walk through it twice.

San Diego Botanic Garden spends most of the year being a perfectly nice place to look at succulents. Then November comes, the sun drops around five, and a whole Encinitas hillside switches on. Lightscape turns the garden into a mile of light and music, and kids walk it like they’ve been let in on a secret. It’s a field trip after dark. Bedtime is the only catch.

The 2026 season, the event’s fifth, runs November 20 through January 3, 2027. Here’s what tickets and parking actually cost, how the timed entry works, which entry slot makes sense for little legs, and what to bring. Prices vary by date and the details shift a little every year, so check the garden’s page before you buy.

Know the Trail Before You Book

Lightscape is one route, one way, about a mile long. It winds through San Diego Botanic Garden at 300 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas, with more than 20 new installations this season plus a few returning favorites, all set to music. Parking lots open at 4:30 p.m., the trail opens at 5, and everyone’s out by 10. Nobody rushes you. Once you’re in, you can stay until closing.

Every ticket carries a 15-minute entry window, and the garden asks you to arrive 15 minutes before yours. Windows start at 5 p.m. and last entry is around 8:30, so go by the time printed on your ticket rather than counting on a late slot. Tickets sell through Fever, online or in the app. Walking up and hoping is a plan. Not a good one.

What It Actually Costs

The stretch every kid insists on running. Let them.

General admission starts at $28 for adults and $18 for children 3 to 12, and kids 2 and under are free. Prices climb on busier dates, every ticket adds a $3 service fee, and buying on the day of your visit costs $5 more per adult and $2 more per child. Garden members get 20 percent off standard tickets all season, and military discounts are available. Buy early. It’s cheaper.

Parking isn’t included. It’s $15 per vehicle if you buy in advance, or $20 on site if spots are left, and the garden is clear that on-site parking is limited. All sales are final. You can exchange tickets up to 48 hours before your visit, with fees, but there are no refunds, so pick a night you’re fairly sure about. Bikes park free at the Yellow Lot.

Timing It for Little Ones

Giant glowing dandelions. Nobody is supposed to make a wish. Everyone does.

The 5 p.m. window is the toddler slot. It’s dark enough by then for the lights to do their job, and you’ll be back in the car well before the meltdown hour. A mile is a real walk for a four-year-old, especially in the dark, and parts of the garden have dirt paths and uneven ground. Wheelchair-accessible routes are available. Tell the parking attendants about mobility needs and they’ll point you to spots near the Blue Entrance path.

The show goes on in drizzle or any “bad” weather (do we even get bad weather here?) and only closes if conditions get severe. Fair enough. Somewhat surprisingly, there’s a strict no-pet policy and service animals need to check in at Visitor Services on arrival. Rain Jackets, yes. Labradors, no.

Snacks, Layers, and the Walk Back

Concession stands along the trail sell warm food and snacks, with gluten-free and vegetarian options, and they take credit, debit, and mobile payments only. Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed. Feed everyone a real dinner before you go and treat the trail snacks as dessert. Dessert usually wins anyway.

Coastal North County gets cool once the sun drops, even after a warm December afternoon. Bring a jacket for everyone, including the kid who swears they’re not cold, and wear shoes that can handle a dirt path. Somebody is going to want to be carried for the last quarter mile. Plan for it.

Parent Tip

Family time is precious, and life doesn’t get any less busy. Make the time and take the time! The same goes for date night. Soak up the family time, then set the kiddos up for another great evening with a Sitterwise caregiver while Mom and Dad get some much-needed face time. Yes, this is the part where we plug ourselves. We’d be terrible at our jobs if we didn’t.

The kids won’t remember any of the details you had to navigate, but experiences like this stick. They’ll remember holding your hand and the sparkly, seasonal wonder of it all. They’ll remember one of the few nights they had to bundle up in San Diego, walking through twinkle lights in a beautiful garden with something warm in their hands. Pure magic.
