Labor Day Weekend in San Diego: Beaches, Events, and a Night for You
Sep 5–7 is the last real weekend of summer here. Here’s how to spend it with the kids, and how to sneak away without them.
If you’re in San Diego over Labor Day weekend, you picked a good one. This is the weekend the whole city treats like summer’s last lap, everyone’s out, the vibes are peak-summer, and there’s an extra hit of sweetness in the air knowing it’s a three-day weekend with an ocean view just about everywhere you turn. Beaches are lively, but not brutal, hotels host public events and there’s enough happening that you can soak up the fun, find moments to relax, and get a much needed night out (San Diego babysitting is our specialty). Here are some of our faves for this Labor Day:
A no-stress Labor Day weekend for families staying in San Diego:
- Beach mornings at Moonlight Beach or La Jolla Shores
- Little Italy Mercato, Saturday morning
- Little Italy Stickball Tournament, Sat–Sun
- Dive-in movie night at Mission Bay Resort
- Free organ concert or lawn program at Balboa Park
- One evening out, kids happily settled with a caregiver
Beach Picks for the Long Weekend
Moonlight Beach
- Volleyball courts, playground, and a grassy park for a sand break
- Snack shack (Beach Wolf) if you forgot lunch
- Bump Coffee nearby for the best cold brew in the county
La Jolla Shores
- Calm, forgiving shore, probably the safest beach in the county for littles
- Playground, grass, and built-in picnic tables and BBQs on site
- Shorehouse Kitchen right there for brunch (go early, it fills up)
Hotel del Coronado Boardwalk
- Wide beachfront walkway with real shopping, not the usual gift shop stuff
- Bike rentals through the “Bike The Del” program
- Pairs well with dinner after at Little Frenchie or The Henry
Things Happening Around Town
Little Italy Mercato
- Produce, flowers, fresh bread, and coffee stalls, six blocks of it
- Great for a day date or a family morning out
- The bay’s a few blocks away for a stroll after
Little Italy Stickball Classic
- Up to 12 teams play it out in the streets, broomsticks and all
- Started in the early ’90s with a handful of homesick New Yorkers, still going 30+ years later
- Fun to walk through even if you’re not playing, the whole neighborhood turns out
Dive-In Movie Night
- The pool turns into an open-air theater, kids float on rafts
- Free for guests, no need to dress up
- Also on the schedule: beach yoga, live music, and fireworks Saturday night
Balboa Park
- Free concert on the world’s largest outdoor pipe organ, Sunday at 2pm
- Monday at 7:30pm is closing night of the summer organ festival
- A different country hosts a lawn program every Sunday: music, dance, food
Parents’ Night Out, While You’re in Town
Somewhere in this weekend, there’s an hour where the kids are fed, settled, and someone else is handling bedtime, and you two are walking the Del’s boardwalk at sunset with nowhere to be. Or just sitting down to dinner and finishing a sentence without narrating it for a four-year-old first. That hour is easy to lose to “we’ll figure it out later.” Figure it out now.
It doesn’t take much planning. Wherever you spent the day, there’s a good dinner spot close by: Herb & Sea or Solace near Moonlight Beach, Shorehouse Kitchen (dinner Wed-Sat) in La Jolla Shores, or Little Frenchie and The Henry in Coronado after a sunset walk on the boardwalk.
Sitterwise has been sending caregivers to San Diego hotels since 1981. This is the whole reason the company exists. A caregiver comes right to your room or rental, kids stay in their own space with their own stuff, and you get your evening back without packing anyone into a car.
“She did a great job with our baby, who can be fussy at bedtime. We felt very comfortable leaving her in such capable hands.”
Lindsay A., baby care“Our lively one-year-old son adored her. She was simply brilliant with infants. We could not recommend her more.”
