Hotel del Coronado: Where Kids Shine and Memories Last Forever
Photography & words by Amy Gray · Coronado, California
I’ve photographed hundreds of families along the Southern California coast, and nothing — not the cliffs of La Jolla, not the boardwalks of Mission Beach — comes close to the magic that happens when kids arrive at Hotel del Coronado. Every time I prep my camera on that stretch of sand and watch a child sprint toward the waves for the first time, or look up wide-eyed at the Victorian red-roofed towers, I see the same thing: something in them wakes right up. This place awakens a sense of adventure and gets family memories started fast.
That joy is exactly what this place was built for. Set on 28 oceanfront acres along one of the most stunning stretches of sand in Southern California, the Del — as locals call it — has been welcoming families since 1888. Today it spans approximately 938 rooms, suites, and villas across the main hotel, Beach Village, and Shore House. It is the largest resort of its kind in the region, and as someone who spends real time here, I can tell you it earns every bit of its iconic status.

The Beach Is Right There — and It’s Extraordinary
One of my favorite things about photographing at the Del is that the beach isn’t just nearby — it’s part of the resort. Step out of the main building and you’re on the sand within seconds. For families, this is a game changer. There’s no parking, no crossing busy streets, no loading and unloading a car with a mountain of beach gear. The wide, beautiful shoreline is the kind of place kids immediately want to run across — chasing birds, building sandcastles, and hunting for shells along the waterline. It’s endlessly entertaining without anyone even getting wet, and the hotel’s multiple pools are right there when the water fun begins.
As a photographer, I love how easy it is to move between settings here. One minute I’m shooting a toddler discovering the texture of wet sand; the next I’m stepping back to capture the whole family with that unmistakable red roofline in the frame. Parents love the flow too — you can run back to the room for sunscreen, a snack, or a dry towel without it becoming a whole production.

Pools, Programming, and the Art of Keeping Kids Happy
Beyond the ocean, the resort has multiple pools suited to different family rhythms. There are lively family pools where kids can splash freely, and quieter pool areas tucked into Beach Village and Shore House for families who prefer a more relaxed pace. That variety matters — some days you want the energy, some days you want calm.
The Del also layers in seasonal kids’ activities, beach games, and family programming throughout the year. Bike rentals let families explore the flat, lovely streets of Coronado Island. Movie nights under the stars are a genuine hit. At Christmastime, the resort sets up an outdoor ice skating rink right on the property, and the whole place gets transformed around a holiday theme — last year it was Wizard of Oz, which was every bit as magical as it sounds. The property is large enough that even during peak season it absorbs crowds well, so it never feels chaotic.
Amy’s Photography Tips for the Del
- Golden hour is non-negotiable. The light that hits those white Victorian walls in the last 45 minutes before sunset is extraordinary — warm, directional, and flattering for every skin tone. Book a session or just have your phone ready.
- Face the hotel, not the ocean. Most families instinctively turn toward the water — but turning kids back toward the Del gives you the iconic architecture as your backdrop with beautiful reflected light on little faces.
- The pool deck at mid-morning has gorgeous soft light and the kids are usually at peak energy. Candids here are magic.
- Let the kids lead. Some of the best family photos I’ve ever taken at the Del happened when I stopped directing and just followed the kids. Genuine laughter beats a posed smile every time.
- Don’t skip the shops under the hotel. The arcade of boutiques beneath the main building is a genuine treat for kids, and the ice cream shop is basically mandatory. It also makes a great mid-session reset — grab a cone and let everyone recharge.
Room to Breathe: Accommodations Built for Families
Nearly 938 accommodations means real options. The historic main hotel delivers classic Victorian charm — staying in the original building is a genuinely special experience. Beach Village offers more expansive multi-room layouts that work well for larger families, while Shore House is cozy and compact, better suited for smaller groups or a couple’s getaway.
The larger suites are where families with kids really have room to breathe — space to decompress after a big beach day, spread out snacks, and let everyone wind down without being on top of each other. Good furniture and thoughtful layout design matter more than most people realize until they’re living in a space for a week with children. The Del gets this right.

Dining With Kids — and Without Them
The Del’s dining scene works for families at every hour and appetite level. Casual beachfront spots serve the classics — burgers, fish tacos, fresh-squeezed lemonade — without any of the stress of sitting still in a formal restaurant with sandy, sun-tired kids. More refined options give parents something to look forward to once the little ones are settled.
And that brings me to something I always mention when I talk to families planning a stay here: if you want a real evening out — a quiet dinner, a sunset walk along the boardwalk, or a full evening to yourselves — Sitterwise makes that possible without any of the anxiety. You can book a trusted, vetted local sitter to care for your kids in the room while you actually enjoy what the resort has to offer. As a parent myself, I know how rare that feels and how much it matters.
Why the Del Keeps Drawing Families Back
I’ve been coming to Hotel del Coronado for years, and I still feel something every time I turn the corner and see those red turrets against a blue sky. Part of it is the place itself — the history, the scale, the way it sits so comfortably on that enormous stretch of beach. But a bigger part of it is what I witness here over and over: families making memories together that are going to last a lifetime.
Kids who ran into these waves at age four come back at fourteen and still remember it. Families who stayed in Beach Village one summer are already planning the next. The Del earns that loyalty because it genuinely delivers on every level — for the children who want to play hard, for the parents who want to relax without guilt, and for anyone who simply wants to stand on a remarkable piece of Southern California coastline and feel like the world is exactly right.
If you’re planning a family trip here, feel free to reach out about a beach session. There is no better setting for family portraits anywhere on this coast — and I should know.
